Nouns
Noun- A person, place or thing.
For example- Sally, Australia, table, happy
The BIRD lives in CANADA.
Adjectives
An adjective describes a noun or pronoun.
For example- happy, brave, more, really.
The TALL person won the game.
Verb
A verb is an action word. They tell what action someone or something is doing.
For example- ran, climb, ask, breath.
The bird FLEW from Canada to England.
Pronoun
A pronoun takes the place of a noun. It can take the place of a name, place or thing.
For example- I, she, it, them.
SHE gave THEM a lolly.
Article
An article comes before the noun.
For example- THE bird, AN apple, A donkey.
THE sun gives light to THE moon.
Adverb
An adverb describes the verb. The adverb tells how, when, where or to what extent.
For example- quickly, slowly
Preposition
A preposition tells the position of the noun or pronoun.
For example- from, over, under, below.
He placed the box UNDER the table.
Conjunction
A conjunction joins two ideas or two words into a single sentence. They join two clauses together.
For example- and, but, because, nor.
The bird sang WHILE the lion pranced.
Interjection
An interjection expresses emotion strongly. An interjection normally has an exclamation mark.
For example- Ow! Ouch! Hey! Please! Phew!
“OW! What was that for?”
Abstract Nouns
Abstract Nouns are words that aren’t related to the five senses. They are thoughts, ideas and emotions
For example- happy, truth, frustrating.
Sally was very HAPPY when the TRUTH came out.
Proper Nouns
Proper Nouns are a name or place. Proper Nouns have capital letters at the beginning.
For example- Melbourne, Fred, South Australia
RIANNA moved from SOUTH AUSTRALIA to MELBOURNE.
Collective Nouns
Collective nouns are words that refer to a group. Either people, things or numbers.
For example- dozen, flock, pod
There were a DOZEN dolphins in the POD.
Common Nouns
Common Nouns are words that name a place, thing, animal or idea.
For example- dog, tree, pole
The BIRD flew up onto the TREE.
Singular Nouns
A singular noun names one place, place, thing or idea.
For example- building, rail, dirt
The railings were full of DIRT.
Plural Nouns
A plural noun names more than one place, thing, animal or ides. They often end in s.
For example- dolls, pencils, hillocks
