Parts of Railway Flashcards
Components of a Railway Track
- Rail Section
- Sleepers
- Ballast
- Rail Fastening
- Subgrade
- Embankment
Made of high-quality steel, they form the primary pathway for trains
Rails
also known as ties/support. Keeps the rails apart at required distance. Distribute the load to the Ballast
Sleepers
Used to connect the rails and sleepers together in proper positions
Fastening / Railway Fastening
broken stone placed below the sleepers to transmit load from sleeper to the formation and allows drainage of the tracks
Ballast
Normal occurring ground which when prepared can receive the blast and track
Subgrade
Prepared subgrade for blast and track
Formation
it connects individual rail sections
Rail Joints
it facilitates train direction to change and track intersection
Switches and Crossings
it helps manage water flow preventing track damage
track drainage system
it ensures even load distribution. consist of ballast and sub-ballast layers
Track Bed
designed to reduce vibrations, acts as cushioning impacts
Rail Pads
it allows for temperature-induced rail expansion and contraction
Expansion Joint
it Provides electrical power to trains
Electrification System
