Golgi Body
Packages and ships materials throughout the cell
“Post office of the cell”
Looks like a stack of pancakes
Lysosome
Breaks down waste for the cell
Only in animal cells
Ribosomes
Builds proteins for the cell
Looks like small circles
Cell Membrane
Controls what goes in and out.
Thin outside layer of the cell
Cytoplasm
A gel-like fluid that fills the cell and holds organelles in place
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Transports materials
“Highway of the cell”
Looks like a maze
Nucleus
Controls the cell
“The brain of the cell”
Contains the DNA
Mitochondrion (Mitochondria)
Works like the digestive system to take in nutrients to break down and make energy
“The powerhouse of the cell”
Vacuole
Stores things for the cell (often holds food or water)
Either only plant, or plant and animal (read below)
Plant cells have a central vacuole instead of a vacuole, but they both do the same thing. Some sources say that only plant cells have it, some say both do.
Chloroplast
Uses the sun’s energy to make glucose
Only in plant cells – Oval shaped
Cell Wall
A rigid structure that supports and protects the cell
Only in plant cells
Organelles
The tiny structures that carry out specific functions for cells
Like the cell’s organs
