Parts Of An Atom Flashcards
What are the Subatomic Particles inside of atoms called?
Protons, neutrons and electrons.
What charge does protons have?
Positive
What charge does neutrons have?
No charge (they are neutral)
What charge do electrons have?
Negative
Where are neutrons and protons found?
Inside the nucleus (centre of an atom)
What is the nucleus?
The central core of an atom
Where is most of the weight in an atom?
Inside the nucleus, because the protons and neutrons which are heavier then electrons are found there.
What does the Atomic Number tell us?
How many protons and electrons are in an atom.
What does the Atomic Mass tell us?
The atomic mass tells us how many neutrons and protons are in each atom. The formula is atomic mass - atomic # = # of neutrons.
What is the overall charge of an atom?
An atom has no charge because the protons and electrons cancel each others charge out.
What part of the atom is tightly packed?
The nucleus is very tightly packed.
What part of the atom is not tightly packed?
The electrons.
How can you find an atoms atomic mass?
of protons + # of neutrons = atomic mass
Where can you find Electrons?
Electrons occupy the space outside of the nucleus. They orbit around the nucleus of an atom.
How many electrons can be held on each orbital?
1st orbital: 2, 2nd orbital: 8, 3rd orbital: 8
