Different Types Of Atoms Flashcards
What are atoms?
Single units of matter not joined with other matter
What are elements?
Two or more of the same kind of atom joined together chemically
What are compounds?
Two or more of different kinds of atoms joined together chemically
What are molecules?
Two or more of the same or different kinds or atoms joined together chemically
What does 4H2O3 say
8 Hydrogen, 12 oxygen
What do we call atoms that don’t form molecules?
Inert, stable, unreactive. Examples are in group 18.
What do we call atoms that form molecules?
Unstable, reactive. Examples of these are in groups 1-17
What can atoms do to become stable?
Gain or lose electrons.
Why are atoms in group 18 stable?
Noble gases (group 18) are stable because their outer shell is full of electrons.
Why are atoms in groups 1-17 unstable?
Atoms in groups 1-17 are unstable because their outer shell is not full of electrons.
Why are atoms in groups 1-17 unstable?
Atoms in groups 1-17 are unstable because their outer shell is not full of electrons.
How do we know if atoms will gain or lose electrons to become stable?
Atoms take the simplest path
Definition of unreactive atoms?
These atoms are stable, and tend not to combine with other atoms to form molecules.
Definition of reactive atoms?
These atoms are unstable and tend to combine with other atoms to form molecules. Certain atoms are more reactive than others.
Why are most atoms unstable?
Atoms without a full outer shell are unstable, and will react with other atoms to get a full outer shell.
