Tissue through which water and minerals flow up through a plant.
Xylem
A layer just inside the epidermis of roots and stems. It stores food.
Cortex
The outermost layer of a root.
Epidermis
A thin covering made up of cells. It protects the root tip as it grows into the soil.

Threadlike parts of a cell on the surface of a root.

A layer that separates the xylem from the phloem. The cambium is where new xylem and phloem are produced.

Tissue through which food from the leaves moves down through a plant.
Phloem
The food making process in green plants that uses sunlight.
Photosynthesis
The release of energy in plants and animals from food (sugar).
