A thin covering make up of cells that protect the root tip of a plant as it grows into the soil.
root cap
Any of the threadlike projections from a plant root that absorbs water and dissolved minerals from the soil.
root hair
an outermost layer of such plants as roots and leaves.
epidermis
A layer of tissue just inside the epidermis of a plant’s roots and stems. It stores food. (hint- Core rhymes with store.)
cortex
the tissue through which water and minerals move up through a plant. (hint- it rhymes with sky and it moves up to the sky)
xylem
The tissue through which food from leaves moves down through the rest of a plant. (hint- phlo down the river)
phloem
A layer in plants that separates the xylem from the phloem.
cambium
The loss of water through a plant’s leaves.
transpiration
The food-making process in green plants that uses sunlight.
photosynthesis
The release of energy in plants and animals from food (sugar)
respiration
What a living thing does as a result of a stimulus.
response
Something in the environment that causes a living thing to react.
stimulus
A response of a plant toward or away from a stimulus.
tropism
A characteristic that enables a living thing to survive in its environment.
