Parts of a light microscope Flashcards
Coarse Adjustment Knob
What should we not do with this knob?
Moves the stage up and down for focusing; primarily use this to focus on your specimen; do NOT use this on high power(40x)
Objective lenses
After the light passes through the specimen, it enters the objective lenses; has the scanning power objective lens, low-power objective, and the high power objective. (Magnification: 4x,10x,40x)
Eyepiece
Contains the ocular lens; it further magnifies an image sent from the body tube
Light source
Where is the switch usually located?
Projects light upwards through the diaphragm, specimen, and the lenses; usually is a bulb or a mirror; never use direct sunlight; the switch is usually on the base of the microscope, and sometimes on the power cord
Stage clips
Holds the slide in place; prevents the slide from slipping on the stage
Nosepiece
Holds the objective lenses and can be rotated to adjust magnification and switch objectives
Low power objective
(10x)
Oil immersion lens
(100x)
High power objective
(40x)the longest objective
Base
Supports the microscope; the bottom part of a microscope; put the palm of your hand under the base to support microscope when carrying it
Why can we never use direct sunlight as a light source?
The sunlight may damage your eyes
Diaphragm
The part of a microscope that you can adjust or regulate the amount of light that goes through the specimen ( ranges from 1-5 with 5 being the most light)
Scanning power objective lens
Had a magnification of (4x) and is the shortest objective
Arm
Used to support the microscope when carried; the correct place to grip when carrying microscope
What is the equation for the total magnification obtained in the microscope?
The product of the eyepiece times the objective lens;
