Q

Nucleus

A

The organelle that contains DNA and directs all cellular activities. The nucleus is surrounded by the nuclear envelope, which has pores to allow the transport of materials.

Q

Cell Membrane

A

A protective barrier for the cell. It allows the cell the transport of needed materials into the cell, and waste materials out of the cell. It is important for cell interaction an recognition of molecules.

Q

Cytoplasm

A

A gel-like substance inside the cell membrane: contains the nutrients required by the cell to carry on the life processes. Organelles are suspended in the cytoplasm. Allows for the movement of organelles and molecules within the cell.

Cell Wall

A

Found in plants, bacteria and fungi. Is a rigid frame around the cell that provides strength and support.

Chloroplasts

A

Found only in plants. They contain chlorophyll that produces a green colour. They are the sites of photosynthesis.

Q

Vacuoles/Vesicles

A

Membrane bound structures that serve to store nutrients, products of secretion, and fats. The central vacuole stores water for the cell. In plant cells, when the central vacuole swells, increasing the turgor pressure and causing the cell to become firm. Vesicles transport substances throughout the cell.

Q

Endoplasmic Reticulum

A

A series of interconnected small tubes that branch from the nuclear envelope. Materials can be transported through these tubes. Rough endoplasmic reticulum has ribosomes attached to it and is associated with protein synthesis. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is associated with fat and oil production.

Q

Ribosomes

A

Dense looking granules formed of two parts. They may be attached to the endoplasmic reticulum or free in the cytoplasm. Are the sites where amino acids are assembled into proteins in the process of protein synthesis.

Q

Lysosomes

A

Membrane bound sacs in the cell in which digestion can go on. The various roles of lysosomes include defence against invading bacteria, destruction of damaged cell organelles, and controlled digestion of certain tissues during development.

Q

Golgi Apparatus

A

Composed of flat disc-shaped sacs involved in secretion. The Golgi receives substances from the endoplasmic reticulum and packages them for export.
