Biology 10 Vocabulary Flashcards
Selectively Permeable
Allows certain particles to pass through, but not all particles.
Cytoplasmic Streaming
Distribution of materials within cells through a circular flow of the cytoplasm.
Cytoskeleton
Network of protein fibres that supports cells that contain a nucleus.
Concentration Gradient
Determines the direction in which water or solutes will move. The difference within a given area between the highest and lowest concentration of a particular substance.
Hypertonic
A solution that has a higher concentration of solutes than that in the cell, is hypertonic to the cell. Water will leave cell.
Hypotonic
A solution that has a lower concentration of solutes than that in the cell, is considered hypotonic to the cell. Water will enter the cell, because there is a lower water:solute ratio in the cell. Water is needed to balance that out.
Isotonic
A solution that has the same concentration of solutes in a solution as that in the cell. No net movement of water.
Carrier Proteins
A protein present in a cell membrane that binds it to a specific molecule and transports it through the membrane. They attach to larger molecules and change shape to physically move molecules across membranes. Then they return to their original shape.
Channel Protein
A protein in the cell membrane that forms a passageway through which specific solutes can pass by diffusion. Some channels open and close in response to binding of specific molecules.
