- Lists the following: title/subtitle, author’s name, illustrator’s name (if applicable), and publisher
Copyright
Usually printed on the back of the title page
- Lists: copyright notice, publication information, printing history, cataloging information from Library of Congress, publisher’s address, and legal notices
Dedication Page
Located across from copyright page
- A message from the author to someone that usually thanks or honors the person
Table of Contents
Usually located towards front of book
- Helps reader understand the structure of a book so the reader can quickly see and find specific content
- Lists chapters and corresponding page numbers in order
- It is like a map for the book
Chapters/Main Text
The words that fill up most of the book
- Text is either fiction or nonfiction
- Readers spend most of their time on this text
- The main text is often divided into chapters in a book
Glossary
Located at the end of a book
- Alphabetized list of important words found in the book along with their definitions
- It is like a tiny dictionary with words for that specific book
Index
Found at the very end of a nonfiction book
- Alphabetized list of topics in the book along with the corresponding page numbers
Author’s Biography
Provides information about the author’s and/or illustrator’s life and work
Preface
Located at the beginning of the book
- Remarks usually about how the book came to be or how the idea for the book developed
Afterword
Located at the end of a book
- (Usually written by the author) It covers how the book came to be or how the idea for the book developed
Epilogue
A final chapter
- It brings closure to the story from within the work, often discussing the fate of the characters
