Parts Flashcards
2 main sets of skull
8 cranial bones
14 facial bones
squamous portion” of this cranial bone is considered as the most vulnerable portion of the skull to fracture
occipital
Calvarium
Skullcup
4 parts of calvarium
Frontal
Right & left parietal
Occipital
4 parts of floor
Right & left temporal
Sphenoid
Ethmoid
This is where the Frontal
Sinus is located and serves as the roof of the
orbit
Frontal bone
articulates with 4 cranial bones, and
with 8 facial bones
Frontal
– the largest portion of the
cranium.
- articulates with 5 cranial bones
Parietal Bone
four cranial
bones:
right and left parietals,
sphenoid, and ethmoid
2 main parts of frontal bone
Squamos or vertical portion
Orbital or horizontal portion
portion- which forms
the forehead
squamous or
vertical
portion-which forms
the superior part of the orbit
orbital or
horizontal
is the smooth, raised
prominence between the eyebrows
just above the bridge of the nose
Glabella-
is
the slight depression above each
eyebrow. Becomes an important
landmark because it corresponds
to the floor of the anterior fossa of the cranial vault, which
is also at the level of the orbital
plate or at the highest level of the
facial bone mass
Supraorbital groove (SOG)
superior
rim of each orbit
Supraorbital Margin-
is a small hole or opening within
the SOM slightly medial to its
midpoint. The supraorbital nerve
and artery pass through this small
opening.
Supraorbital notch (foramen)
rounded prominence On each side
of the squamous portion of the
frontal bone above the SOG
Frontal tuberosity (eminence)
As can be seen from the inferior
aspect, the frontal bone shows
primarily the horizontal or orbital
portion (Fig. 11-7), which consists
of the SOM, superciliary ridges
glabella and frontal
tuberosities
Orbital or horizontal portion
- inferoposterior part of the cranium.
- This is where the Foramen Magnum is located.
- Articulates with Atlas through Atlanto-Occipital
Joint. - Articulates with 5 cranial bones.
Occipital Bone
location of Pars Petrosa or Petrous
Pyramid that houses the organ of hearing and
balance.
- It contains the mastoid portion of the skull.
- Location of TM fossa.
- Articulates w/ 3 cranial bones
Temporal Bone –
part of the Ethmoid bone of the skull that serves as the anterior attachment of the falx cerebri
crista galli
the pathways of communication between the frontal, maxillary, and ethmoid sinuses that provide drainage between these sinus cavities
a. Osteomeatal Complex
fracture located to one side of a structure that is caused by an impact or blow on the opposite side
contrecoup
