part 2 Flashcards
–the smallest among the cranial bones of the skull.-It contains the ethmoidal sinuses w/in its labyrinths-This is where the Crista Galli is located (E.C.G). -Articulates w/ 2 cranial and 11 facial bones
Ethmoid Bone
bat shape-Location of SellaTurcica/ Turkish Saddle/ -It contains the sphenoid sinuses.
Sphenoid Bone
It contains the foramen Rotundum, Ovale, Spinosum located w/in the greater wing of the sphenoid, and also the Optic Foramen.-Serves as the keystone of the cranium
Sphenoid Bone
Serves as the keystone of the cranium -Articulates w/ all 7 cranial bones, and 5 facial bones
Sphenoid Bone
The bones of the cranial vault are composed of two plates of compact tissue separated by an inner layer of spongy tissue called
diploe.
-The articulations or joints of the cranium
Sutures
Classified as fibrous joints (Immovable/ Synarthrodial-type joints).
Sutures
-separates the frontal bone from the two parietal bones.
Coronal Suture
-separating the two parietal bones in the midline.
Sagittal Suture
-separates the two parietal bones from the occipital bone.
Lambdoidal Suture
-are formed by the inferior junctions of the two parietal bones with their respective temporal bones.
Squamosal Sutures
Joints of the Cranium
-Sutures
-are membrane-covered openings or “soft spots.”
Fontanels
The anterior end of the sagittal suture.
Bregma-
-The posterior end of the sagittal suture.
Lambda
-are points at the junction of the parietals, temporals, and the greater wings of the sphenoid. (The pterions are at the posterior end of the sphenoparietal suture).
Pterions
-are points posterior to the ear where the squamosal and lambdoidal sutures meet.
Asterions
(literally meaning “great hole”).
large opening at the base of the occipital bone through which the spinal cord passes as it leaves the brain.
Foramen magnum
-Lateral view The paired right and left temporal bones are complex structures that house the delicate organs of hearing and balance
situated between the greater wing of the sphenoid bone anteriorly and the occipital bone posteriorly
TEMPORAL BONE
- This process meets the temporal process of the zygomatic bone (one of the facial bones) to form the easily palpated zygomatic arch
ZYGOMATIC PROCESS
Inferior to the zygomatic process and just anterior to the external acoustic (auditory) meatus (EAM) is the______ into which the mandible fits to form the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
temporomandibular (TM) fossa
3 parts of Temporal Bone:
Squamous, Mastoid, Petrous Portion
1st : PORTION of temporal
thin upper portion that forms part of the wall of the skull, most vulnerable portion of the entire skull to fracture
squamos
2nd: PORTION of temporal
the area posterior to the EAM, with a prominent mastoid processor tip. Many air cells are located within the mastoid process.
MASTOID
3rd: PORTION of temporal
also is called the petrous pyramid or pars petrosa
is the thickest
and densest bone in the cranium.
PETROUS
- central depression on the body
SELLA TURCICA
