particulate nature of matter Flashcards
what does the kinetic particle theory state
- all matter is made up of tiny particles
- particles are in constant and random motion, colliding with one another
answering technique for particulate nature of matter
MADAME
model, arrangement, distance, forces of attraction, movement, energy
describe what happens during melting
particles will gain heat and hence gain kinetic energy, vibrating faster. the particles will overcome the forces of attraction between them and move further apart. particles will now slide over one another
describe what happens during freezing
particles will lose heat, and hence lose kinetic energy, moving more slowly. the forces of attraction between the particles become stronger and the particles move closer to one another. all the particles vibrate about their fixed positions.
what is sublimation
sublimation is the change from a solid to a gas, without melting
what are the four substances that sublime
iodine, ammonium chloride, naphthalene and dry ice (solid carbon dioxide)
what is the reverse of sublimation
deposition
what is diffusion
diffusion is the process whereby particles move from a. region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration due to constant random motion of the particles.
what happens to the rate of diffusion as temperature increases
the rate of diffusion will increase
what are the units of relative molecular mass
no units!!
how many decimal places is relative molecular mass recorded to
1dp
a gas with lower relative molecular mass will diffuse faster or slower?
faster
what are the two factors that affect the rate of diffusion
- temperature
