particles and elements chem Flashcards
How many elements are there on the periodic table?
118
What dows matter mean
matter is the scientific word for stuff that makes everything around us.
Why are chemicals like water and carbon dioxide not on the periodic table?
they are molecules ( combination of atoms )
What are atoms made of?
Protons, neutrons and electrons
Where are protons and neutrons?
They are in an atom, they make the nucleus.
Where are electrons?
They are in an atom, they orbit the nucleus.
What does an atom have the same of?
protons and electrons
What is the smaller number on the periodic table?
the atomic number.
What is the larger number on the periodic table
The atomic mass
What is the name of the state change between solid and liquid
melting
What is the name of the state change between liquid and solid
freezing
What is the name of the state change between liquid and gas
boiling
What is the name of the state change between gas and liquid
condensing
What is the name of the state change between gas and solid
deposition
What is the name of the state change between solid and gas
sublimation
What happens when you heat up a particles?
They vibrate more.
What is absolute zero
the lowest possible temperature (-273.15)
What is the difference between evaporation and boiling
evaporation happens layer at a time.
What is thermal expantion
When you heat a substance, the partials vibrate more, and so the spread out causing the substance to expand.
What is particle pressure?
When particles hit against a surface, they push on it with a small amount of force, this is known as pressure. A higher temperature will give the particles more energy making them move faster, hit surfaces with a greater force and increasing the pressure.
what is the formula for density?
mass (g)/ volume (cm squared)
What is the formula for mass
density X volume
what is the formula for volume
mass/density
what is the atomic number?
How many protons are in the nucleus
