Particles Flashcards
What is a hadron?
Particles made of quarks
What is bayron?
A hadron made up of 3 quarks.
What is a meson?
A hadron made of a quark and an antiquark pair.
What is the exchange particle for electromagnetic force?
Photons.
What is the exchange particle for strong nuclear force?
Gluons.
What are the exchange particles for weak nuclear force?
W+Z bosons
What is a photon?
A photon is a boson and an exchange particle for electromagnetic force.
What is a gluon?
A gluon is a boson and is the exchange particle for strong nuclear force.
What are W and Z bosons?
W and Z bosons are bosons that are the exchange particle for weak nuclear force
What happens in alpha decay?
A nuclues releases an alpha particle and looses 4 mass and 2 from its atomic number.
What happens in beta decay?
When a nuclues releases a beta particle it’s mass number stays the same and its atomic number increases by 1.
What is beta decay evidence for?
The emission of beta particles is evedince for the existence of neutrinos.
What is evidence for the existence of neutrinos?
The emmison for beta particles in radioactive decay is evedince for the existence of neutrinos.
What happens in nuclear fission?
A large nuclei splits to create 2 smaller nuclei extra neurons and energy.
When is nuclear fission induced?
If a neutron causes it.
When is nuclear fission spontaneous?
When no neuron causes it.

What are the fundamental forces

What happens to the lost mass in nuclear reactions?
The lost mass is converted to energy
What is threshold frequency?
The threshold frequency is the minimum frequency of photon required to eject an electron from the surface of a metal.
What fundamental particle are electrons?
Leptons
What is the symbol for work function?
hf0
Can fundamental particles be subdivided?
No
Why are alternating supply’s used in linear accelerators?
The particle is always accelerated in the same direction
What would happen if plasma touched the sides?
It would cool down and the reaction would stop
What are fermions?
Qaurks and leptons
What are electrons?
Electrons are leptons and fermions
What is an anti particle?
A particle that has the same mass as its matter counterpart but opposite charge.
