の is one of the super-useful particles in Japanese with multiple functions. In the phrase つまのメアリー, の tells us that the preceding noun is the attribute of the noun that follows it. In other words, つまのメアリー means “Mary who is (my) wife”–or simply, “(my) wife Mary”!
