Particles Flashcards
What are particles
Tiny objects which are too small to see, like an atom or a molecule. That materials are made from
What is a mixture
Two or more substances mixed (not joined) together
What’s the arrangement of solid
The particles are in a fixed position
Why can’t you compress a liquid
Because the particles are in contact with eachother
Arrangement of liquid
The particles are in contact with each other and take the shape of its container
Why can liquid particles flow
Because they can slide past each other and move from place to place
Why can you compress a gas
Because the particles are not in contact with each other and are widely spread
Arrangement of gas
Widely spread move around rapidly and take shape of its comtainer
What is melting
The change of state from a solid to liquid
Explain melting
When a solid melts, it gains energy from the surrounding so it moves around faster and spread out more
Explain freezing
When a liquid freezes, it transferred energy to the surrounding so it slows town and they move close together
What is freezing
The change of state from liquid to solid
Are the melting and boiling point the same?
Yes
Why is a substance boiling point and a mixtures boiling point different?
A substance has a fixed (sharp) boiling or melting point, whereas a mixture has a range which appears as a diagonal line in a graph
