Particles Flashcards
What are particles and name 3 examples
A particle is a tiny bit of matter like dust, atoms or molecules
What are the differences between chemical and physical reactions
Physical changes are a substance changing state or shape, chemical changes involve creating new substances
What happens to particles during chemical and physical changes
In physical changes, particles change their arrangement and movement, however in a chemical change particles break up and join together in different ways
What are the limitations of the particle model
-forces between particles
-size of particles
-space between particles
What is a molecule
Two or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds
What is inside of an atom
A nucleus of protons and neutrons as well as orbiting electrons
What does the atomic number mean
The number of protons in the nucleus
What are isotopes
Atoms with the same amount of electrons and protons but a different number of neutrons, meaning they have a different mass number
What are ions
Charged particles, when an atom loses or gains electrons
Explain Daltons contribution to the atomic model
Suggested all matter is made from atoms and all atoms of an element are identical
Explain Thompsons contribution to the atomic model
Developed the plum pudding model, finding that an atom has overall neutral charge and contained electrons
Explain Rutherfords contribution to the atomic model
Rutherford concludes the atom has a positively charged nucleus and electrons orbit it
Explain Bohrs contribution to the atomic model
Realised that electrons would be attracted to the nucleus and therefore had to orbit in shells
