Particles Flashcards
What are particles?
Everything is made up of tiny spheres called particles
What is a solid?
In the solid state the particles are close together and can only vibrate
What is a liquid?
In the liquid state the particles can still touch their neighbours and can move around sliding over each other
What is a gas?
In the gas state the particles are spread far apart and move around randomly
What is the volume?
The amount of space something takes up
What are properties?
How a substance behaves
What is an attraction?
The force that pulls particles towards eachother
What is melting?
When a solid becomes a liquid
What is evaporating?
When a liquid becomes a gas
What is condensation?
When a gas becomes a liquid
What is freezing?
When a liquid becomes a solid
What is sublimation?
When a solid goes directly to a gas
What is pure?
A substance made from one type of particle
What is impure?
A substance made from two or more different types of particles
What is a mixture?
Are impure and can be easily separated
What is a solute?
The solid dissolved in a solute e.g sugar
What is a solvent?
The liquid that dissolves in a solute e.g water
What is a solution?
The mixture formed by dissolving a solute in a solvent
What is dissolving?
When the solute becomes evenly spread throughout the solvent
What is concentration?
The amount of solute dissolved in a solvent
What does soluble mean?
A substance that can dissolve e.g sugar and water
What does insoluble mean?
A substance that cannot dissolve e.g sand in water
What is filtration?
The process by which a solid (insoluble) particles are removed from a liquid or gas
What can evaporation be used for?
It can be used to separate a soluble solid from a liquid
