Particle Movement and the Microscope Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the difference between active and passive processes

A

Active and Passive and the difference between them is that Passive doesn’t require energy and Active movement requires it. The energy human cells use is ATP. Concentration gradient, or pressure differences drives the movement from high concentration gradient to lower concentration gradient. In Active movement Solutes move against their concentration gradient - so they move from lower concentration gradients to higher concentration.

Q

Define osmosis, diffusion, facilitated diffusion and filtration.

A

Diffusion is a passive movement does not require energy and moves solutes from higher concentration of solutes to area of lower concentrations of solutes (factors change it size of particles, tempeature, PH concentration concentration gradients of particles). Osomosis is passive movement that does not require energy and is related to the movement of water. Facilitated diffusion is a passive movement that does not require energy and Facilitated diffusion moves both, Filtration is related pressure differences. .

Q

List the active processes

A

Endocytosis: enter cells - if particls are solvant (water) that movement is Pinicystosis and phagotosis - moves solutes. Excocytois - exit cells.

Q

Explain isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic solutions

A

Isotonic solutions same amount of solvent and soluants inside the cell and no change in shpae of cell. hyptomic more water (enters and the cell gets bigger,) hypetonic -less water (water exits and cell shrinks. (tonicity) amount of solute.

Q

Describe the main function of each component of the microscope

A

Ocular lens is the lens through which you look to examine the slide. Eye piece is a rotation part that you can adjust the view? Objective lens with various powers of magnification 4x low, 10x medium and 40x high. This magnifies the images by 4x - 100x. The 100x requires oil between the slide and objective lens without it you can’t focus on the image. Stage is the focus on which the slides its. Arm - Supports the microscope and typically houses. the coarse adjustment knobs s moves the stage up and down to change the distance of the stage from the objective lens. Fine adjustment knob fine tunes the image’s focus. Iris diaphragm is an adjustable wheel that allows you to control how much light to pass through the slide.
