Particle model of matter-PAPER 1 Flashcards
What are the properties of solid?
Solid are incompressible because there no gaps between them
particles are in a fixed pattern
fixed size and shape
What is the other method to find out the density for irregular solid?
1) Record height of water in measuring cylinder and the mass of the solid
2) Add the solid being tested to measure the cylinder
3) Record new height in the cylinder
4) original height - new height gives the volume of the solid being tested
5) Calculate the density
What happens when a temperature of a substance increases?
total kinetic energy of the particle increase
What happens when the physical state of substance changes?
total potential energy of the particles change
What is latent heat of fusion?
when a solid is heated at its melting point its temperature doesn’t change heat but the state does to a liquid
latent heat of fusion-energy supplied and the energy required to break the bonds
What is the latent heat of vaporization?
When a liquid is heated at its boiling point, its temperature does not change the state does to a vapour state
latent heat of vaporization- heat energy supplied and is the energy required to break the weak bonds between particles in the liquid
What is the difference of latent heat vaporization and fusion?
vaporization-liquid to gas
fusion-solid to liquid
What is the energy for a change of state equation?
energy for a change of state=mass x specif latent heat
What are the properties of a liquid?
incompressible because there no gaps between them
fixed size but contain particles that are free to move allowing them to change shape to fit the container
What is a gas?
large gaps between particles making them compressible
can change size and shape
What is density?
density=mass/volume
What is the independent variable?
-material being tested
What is the dependent variable?
volume and mass
What is the control variable?
temperature
What is the first step to measure the density of a regular shaped object?
measure the length width and height
calculate the volume=length x width x height
