Particle Model Flashcards
What are mixtures made up of?
Mixtures are made up of more than one substance.
What are substances made up of?
Substances are made up of only one type of material.
What do properties of a substance describe?
Properties of a substance describe how the substance looks, moves or behaves.
What are the characteristics of solids?
Solids have a definite shape, a fixed volume and they don’t move around. Instead they vibrate on the spot.
What are the characteristics of liquids?
Liquids don’t have a definite shape but they do have a fixed volume. The particles slide around each other but they have to be touching in an irregular pattern.
What are the characteristics of gases?
Gases don’t have a definite shape, they don’t have a fixed volume and their particles are not touching in an irregular pattern.
Can solids be compressed?
No.
Do solids flow?
No.
What is the shape of solids?
Fixed unless you apply a force.
Can liquids be compressed?
No.
Do liquids flow?
Yes.
What is the shape of liquids?
Takes the shape of the bottom of the container.
Can gases be compressed?
Yes.
Do gases flow?
Yes.
What is the shape of gases?
Takes the shape of the whole container.
What is melting?
Melting is when a solid turns into a liquid.
What is freezing?
Freezing is when a liquid turns into a solid.
What is boiling/evaporation?
Boiling/Evaporation is when a liquid turns into a gas.
What is condensation?
Condensation is when a gas turns into a liquid.
What is sublimation?
Sublimation is when a solid turns into a gas and vice-versa.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is when particles in high concentration spread out into low concentration.
What factors affect the speed of diffusion?
Three factors affect the speed of diffusion: Temperature, Particle size, The state of the diffusing substance.
What is gas pressure?
Gas pressure is when the particles collide with the walls of the container. The higher the gas pressure, the more particles hitting the walls and faster.
