Particle model Flashcards
What are the properties of a solid?
- Strong force of attraction
- Fixed positions
- High density
What are the properties of a liquid?
- Weak force of attraction
- More energy than solid, less than gas
- Moves past each other, random direction, at low speed
- Less dense than solid
What are the properties of a gas?
- No force of attraction
- More energy than liquid
- Free to move, all directions, high speed
- Low density
Why are gases less dense than solids and liquids?
- Particles are far apart, not close together
Why does the mass of a substance that changes state stay the same?
- The number of particles stay the same
What factor increases the vibration of particles?
- Temperature
What is the kinetic theory of matter?
- How fast the particles in states vibrate
- Amount of energy in states
What is meant by the melting point?
- Temperature it melts
- Same temperature it solidifies
What is meant by boiling point?
- Temperature it boils
- Same temperature it condenses
What is needed to change the state of matter?
- Energy
What is the difference between boiling and evaporation?
- Boiling: occurs throughout liquid at boiling point
- Evaporation: occurs from surface of liquid, below the boiling point
How do you use a temperature-time graph to find the melting or boiling point of a substance?
- The flat section on the graph
