Involuntarily disconnected from economic and social mainstream of society in which one lives
3 Characteristics of Participant conceptualiser (community researchers)
1) Recognises duel process when engaging with community
2) Participant is involved in process
3) Conceptualiser attempting to make sense of what is occurring within a community
Praxis
Unity of theory and action
1st Rung- Manipulation
Participants supposedly engaged in participatory process but don’t want to be, ends up being intervention
2nd Rung- Therapy
Endeavours to educate people on issue but not really attending to issue rather attempts to distract from what is going on
Characteristic of first two rungs
Describes non-participation, enables power-holders to educate or cure participants and it isn’t genuine
Characteristics of rungs three and four
Tokenism- seems surface level genuine but critical appraisal and becomes apparent it is tokenism. Allows have nots to be heard and have voice but there is nuance in this
3rd Rung- Informing
One-way directional flow of information from authority to community
4th Rung- Consultation
Give info to community and person in power seeks info from community but doesn’t act on it
5th Rung- Placation
High level tokenism where particular community members selected and put onto panel but these community members tend to be overburdened
Rungs 6,7 and 8
Redistribution more genuine
6th Rung- Partnership
Community in some instances has financial ability to act on things
7th Rung- Delegated Power
Citizens hold quantifiable level of power, ideological and intrinsic elements to this power, delegation of power away from typical power holders
8th Rung- Citizen Control
Have-nots obtain majority of decision making seats, community in charge and can instigate actual transformative change
