What is the Transmission model
The sender sends a message with an intention and the receiver also perceives it as intended
What is the Expressive model
Communication is a representation of shared beliefs in a society. Emphasis on performance and experience of message.
What is the Publicity model
Communication is a tool to grab and hold attention. Sender competes for the attention of receiver, which is a spectator in this case.
What is the Reception model
Communication is open to multiple interpretations. The receiver may not receive the message as intended by the sender.
The classic view of the powerful media
Powerful media (mass media) reach everyone and influence them.
Explain ‘Hypodermic needle/ Magic-bullet’ effect
Mass media have a strong and negative effect, that influences everyone.
Definition of a theory
A set of systematic, informed hunches about the way things work. Testable predictions based on what is already known.
Theories used in three different ways
- As nets
- As lenses
- As maps
Explain ‘Theories as nets’
We need theories to fall back on if we want to understand the world
Explain ‘Theories as lenses’
Theories influence how we see the world and emphasise certain aspects of society
Explain ‘Theories as maps’
They guide us in knowing how certain things work and how they are related.
Definition of communication
The relational proces of creating and interpreting messages that elicit a response.
Audience in the classic view of powerful media
Defenceless and passive (easy to be influenced all together)
Why does the classic view of powerful media not really apply anymore?
Nowadays, we have way more types of media instead of just one powerful medium like television.
