Appreciation is the combination if respect and knowledge derived from an evaluation of something’s quality and significance.

Previous exposure, personal associations, and visual associations you had with the music are a few of the many influences on taste.
Describe the role of the composer.
Composers take and nurture new ideas, and are often involved with the performance of their music. The composer is communicating something to both performer and listener

Performers help deliver the composers communication to the listener. They can become composers themselves when improvising

Everyone enters the world of music as a listener. They are the receivers of the musical communication, and more fully feel the spirit if the composition and performance through receptive listening and study.
Identify the role music history plays in understanding today’s music development.
While the thread from the past to the present is not always easy to see, music history brigs the fluid growth from the past to the present into perspective. It is a tool that allows us to see the relationship of the different styles and the ways they developed from the ones before.
List the features of a musical style.
Items the distinguish one type of music from another include such musical elements as construction, performance, instrumentation, melody, an harmony. With an awareness f these basic building blocks of music, there is an excitement in plotting stylistic development through history.
Explain why music is a fine art.
Music is a fine art in that it is crafted with care and detail, representing a long development of techniques associated with composing, performing, and listening. The various stylistic periods are explored for their complexity and beauty.
