Q

Define timbre.

A

Timbre is derived from a French word that means “tone-color.” Timbre is the quality of a sound that distinguishes it from other sounds or distinctive tones of the same pitch and volume. All instruments that produce a sound are a composite of the fundamental pitch and its overtones. Timbre is determined by emphasizing certain overtones and suppressing others, due to the instrument configuration, materials, size, and the way the sound is produced
