Lesson Two Review Questions Flashcards
Define amplitude
Amplitude means loudness of volume. Amplitude is controlled by how far each air molecule is displaced. In acoustics, scientists measure amplitude in decibels
Define frequency
Frequency is an accurate term for all sounds (definite or indefinite pitch). Which is made up of physical vibrations of air molecules. A particular pitch will be determined by the speed if the vibrational pattern
Define timbre.
Timbre is derived from a French word that means “tone-color.” Timbre is the quality of a sound that distinguishes it from other sounds or distinctive tones of the same pitch and volume. All instruments that produce a sound are a composite of the fundamental pitch and its overtones. Timbre is determined by emphasizing certain overtones and suppressing others, due to the instrument configuration, materials, size, and the way the sound is produced
Name the four instrumental families of the modern orchestra and the ways they produce sound.
The instrument families are the strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
Strings
Draw a bow across or pluck strings that resonate and are amplified by the body of the instrument
Woodwinds
Sound comes by blowing air into them, covering hikes to change the length of the air column (for pitch change)
Brass
Long and tubular and de the buzzing motion of the lips in a mouthpiece, and pressing a valve to hangs the lefty of the air column
Percussion instruments
Any sound source that is struck to produce a sound (shaking counts too). Piano and harpsichord share their identity with both strings and percussion families since they are both struck and have strings
