part of first psych sac 2 Flashcards
role of dopamine
neurons in the substantia nigra produce the neurotransmitter dopamine, so when the substantia nigra is diseased, the amount of dopamine available to reduced. dopamine carries messages that allow smooth coordinated function of the body muscles and movements, therefore a reduced amount of dopamine makes it hard for the body to have motor movement
parkinson’s disease
chronic, degenerative central nervous disorder characterized by fine muscle tremors, rigidity, and speech problems
neural communication
electrochemical process - uses both electrical and chemical energy
lock and key process
Each neurotransmitter has a chemically distinct shape (key). A neurotransmitter’s shape must precisely match the shape of the receptor site (lock) on the postsynaptic neuron’s dendrites in order to bind to its receptors and restart the neural impulse.
