Distinguish between coaching and therapy
Coaches: help clients who are not experiencing serious mental distress build a batter future
Therapy: generally work with clients in distress and help them heal small and large emotional traumas and/or manage mental health conditions and dysfunctional metal patterns.
Therapists are licensed to treat disorders based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition (DSM-5).
Stay vigilant in noticing issues that may require mental health support such as follows:
- Is exhibiting a decline in his or her ability to experience pleasure and/or an increase in doing sad, hopeless, and helpless
- Has intrusive thoughts or is unable to concentrate or focus
- Is unable to get sleep or awakens during the night and is unable to get back to sleep or sleeps excessively
- Has change in appetite, whether a decrease or increase
- Is feeling guilty because others have suffered or died
- Has feelings of despair or hopelessness
- Is being hyperalert and/or is excessively tired
- Has increased irritability or outbursts of anger
- His impulsive and risk taking behavior
- Has thoughts of death or suicide
Notice is a client holds themselves back with self-defeating behavior.
Distinguish coaching and other professional roles
Consulting: For expertise to dx problems and prescribe/implement solutions. Coaches individuals or teams generate their own solutions, the coach simply facilitates it.
Mentoring: Expert who provides wisdom and guidance based on his or her own experience. Coaching focuses on individuals, groups, and teams reaching their own objectives.
Training: Based non objectives set out by trainer or instructors. Path with associated curriculum. Coaching is less structured without a set curriculum.
Education: Educate others about behaviors. Inform. Coaching enables autonomy and choice.
Athletic development and personal training: Expert who guide and directs behaviors of others based on their expertise. In coaching their client or team determines the direction and does not focus on behaviors that are being performed poorly or incorrectly.
Therapy: Deals with healing pain, dysfunction, and conflict within and individual or relationship. Past focused. Coaching is future focused.
Define liability and scope of practice guidelines
Coach has potential to negatively impact client’s well-being. Only provide expert advice in areas where qualified and licensed.
Need professional liability insurance.
Intervene when necessary.
Be appropriately credentialed.
Be a Board Certified Coach
As a certified Wellcoaches coach (found in the Wellcoaches Certification Handbook):
- Provide expert advice only in the areas where you have nationally recognized credentials.
- You will inform clients of your scope of credentials and expertise.
- Any existing professional, licensure, or certification affiliations that certified health and wellness coaches have with governmental, local, or state, or national agencies or organizations will take precedence relative to any disciplinary matters that pertain to practice or professional conduct.
- Wellcoaches certified coaches shall be dedicated to providing competent and legally permissible services within the scope of practice of their respective certification. These services shall be provided with integrity, competence, diligence, and compassion.
- Wellcoaches certified coaches are truthful about their qualifications and the limitations of their expertise and provide services consistent with their competencies.
