Rule 32 - Define ‘short blast’ and ‘prolonged blast’
- Short blast - about 1 second duration
- Prolonged blast - 4 to 6 second duration
Rule 33 - Equipment for Sound Signals
- Vessel 12m or more provided with a whistle
- Vessel of 20m or more in length provided with a bell and whistle
- Vessel of 100m or more in length shall be provided with a bell, whistle and gong.

- Ring the bell rapidly for about 5 secs

A vessel at anchor of 100m or more in length
- Ring the bell rapidly in the fore part of the vessel
- Immediately after the bell, the gong shall be sounded rapidly for about 5 secs in the after part.
- May in addition sound 1 short blast, 1 prolonged and 1 short blast, to give warning of her position and of the possibility of collision to an approaching vessel.
