Part C Flashcards
What is flexibility
general term used to describe the compliance or capacity of a joint or myofascial structure. All movement requires a certain degree of flexibility
Influenced by: Flexibility Tests:
-muscle temperature - sit and reach test
- congruency - knee to wall test
-connective tissue -shoulder rotation test
- stretch tolerance -modified Thomas test
stretching can change muscle archictecure:
- increase muscle fascicle length
- increase muscle thickness
What is balance
Balance is the ability to control our centre of mass/gravity within our base of support.
Systems contributing to balance:
- vestibular system: fluid in ear
- visual system : cues in the environment
- Somatosensory system: proprioception, touch
-motor control- posture, movement
Manipulate- base of support, line of gravity, centre of gravity
Tests: star excursion test, Berg Balance test, single leg stance test, observe hip and ankle strategies
Aerobic conditoning
the rate of aerobic energy production
Influenced by:
SV, Q, HR, AvO2 diff, oxidative enzymes
tests:
- vo2 max, 2km, yo-yo
Harvard step test, 6 min walk, 40 m walk
-
Aerobic conditioning: continuous training or 1:1, 1:2 ratio
Anaerobic
the total amount of energy that can be derived from the body’s anaerobic energy systems:
influenced by:
- ATP-PC stores, glycolic stores, muscle buffering capacity
Tests: 30 second Wingate test, phosphate recovery test, vertical jump test
Anaerobic conditioning: 1:3-1:5 ratio
for example sprint 10 seconds, 30 seconds rest 8 reps
