Sailing Vessels

You’re on port but unsure
Wind over port gives way
Windward boat gives way

Overtaking
If overtaking keep out of the way
You are overtaking when approaching from angle greater than 22.5 abaft the beam I.e can see a stern light
If in doubt you’re overtaking
Applies until you’re past and clear
Head on head
Both vessels alter to starboard
This is when a vessel is ahead or nearly ahead and you see the corresponding lights or aspect
If in doubt act accordingly
Which craft gives way when Crossing
Crossing and risk of collision, vessel with the other on her starboard gives way
Avoid crossing ahead
Action by give way vessel
Take early and substantial action to keep well clear
Action by stand on vessel
Keep course and speed
May take action if the other is not
Must take action if collision cannot be avoided by the five way vessel alone
Don’t alter to port if a vessel is on your port
Responsibilities between vessels
Except for rule 9 (marrow channels), 10 (traffic separation) and 13 (overtaking) keep out of the way of all above

Restricted Visibility When does it apply What do you do Radar Fog signal forward of beam
Applies to all vessels not in sight of one another when navigating in or near an area of restricted visibility
Proceed at a safe speed for the circumstances
Have your engines read for immediate manoeuvre
If detected a vessel on radar do not
Alter to port
Alter towards a vessel abeam or astern
When hearing a fog signal forward of your beam
Reduce speed to a minimum
Proceed with extreme caution
