Goings was influenced by the Pop Art movement and explored American Popular Culture in his paintings, similar to artists such as Andy Warhol.
Goings often used objects in his still life paintings that represented mass consumerism, such as Heinz Ketchup, which is used in his painting Pie and Iced Tea.Going’s interest in mass consumerism can also be seen in the city scape painting “McDonalds
Pickup”, in which the subject matter is of the fast food chain McDonalds. Thus, Goings was clearly also interested in places of mass consumption and not just the objects being consumed.

Peploe influence

Peploe visited France and his work was influenced by the work of the Fauves, especially by the energetic brushstrokes and bright colour pallet of artists such as Henri Matisse.
As a result Peploe exaggerated his colour palette, which can be seen in “Still Life Tulips - The Blue Jug”.
This was in contrast to his earlier work such as ‘The Coffee Pot’, which has a dark background and realistic colours.
