Part 4: Life Science Flashcards
Ecosystem
All living and nonliving things in an environment.
Habitat
The environment where an organism lives.
Organisms
Living Things
Species
A group of organisms with the same DNA
Population
All of the organisms of the same species in the same area
Food Chain
The path of food energy from one organism to another
Food Web
Overlapping food chains
Producer
An organism that can make its own food.
Consumer
An organism that gets energy by eating other organisms
Herbivore
A consumer that eats only plants
Omnivore
A consumer that eats both plants and animals
Carnivore
A consumer that eats other animals.
Scavenger
A consumer that eats meat from animals that died
Life Cycle
The series of changes in living things
Decomposer
A consumer that eats dead material and waste.
Seed
Undeveloped plant
Stem
Supports a plant and transfers water to leaves.
Leaves
The food making part of a plant.
Root
Anchors plants to the soil and absorbs water
Germination
The sprouting of a plant from a seed
Pollination
The transfer of pollen to the another flower
Photosynthesis
The process plants use to make food. Sunlight+ water+CO2.
Oxygen
A gas animals need to live.
Carbon Dioxide
A gas plants need to live.
Complete Metamorphosis
Insect metamorphosis with a pupa phase.
Incomplete metamorphosis
Insect metamorphosis without a pupa phase.
Egg
The first stage in the life cycle of all organisms.
Larva
Small, worm-like stage of some insects
Nymph
A stage during incomplete metamorphosis.
Pupa
A stage of complete metamorphosis. AKA: Cocoon
Exoskeleton
A hard outer shell that protects an insect’s body
Adaptation
A structure or behaviors that help an organism survive.
Inherit
To pass something on from parent to offspring
Inherited traits
Characteristics that are passed on from parent to child
Offspring
The child of a parent
