Part 4: Impurities Flashcards
What are the conditions for substitutional solid solutions?
Similar atomic radius (<15%)
Proximity in periodic table
Same crystal structure
High valence increases solubility
What are the conditions for interstitial solid solutions?
Atomic radius must be significantly smaller
What is a frenkel defect?
Cation moves from normal position to an interstitial site
What is a Schottky defect?
A cation and an anion are missing
What direction is the burger vector relative to the dislocation line for edge dislocation?
Perpendicular
What direction is the burger vector relative to the dislocation line for screw dislocation?
Parallel
What is a vacancy defect?
An atom is missing from structure
What is an interstitial defect?
An atom has filled a space which should be empty
What are the 3 techniques to examine microscopic grains? Order them from lowest to highest magnification
- Optical
- Electron Microscopic
- Scanning Probe Microscopy
What are the 2 types of electron microscopy? How are they different?
Transmission (TEM) has electrons pass through the specimen. Scanning (SEM) has electrons reflect off the surface of the specimen.
Name 2 linear defects
Edge dislocation and screw dislocation
