Poor Relations with Spain

A

-John Hawkins, Drake’s cousin, and Drake himself went on a voyage in 1564, captured 300 people to enslave and sell in Sierra Leone.

-After this, he illegally traded with the Spanish and sometimes threatened them to accept the trade.

-1568, San Juan de Ulua, despite negotiating a truce with the Spanish, they were attacked by Spanish warships.

-Travelled to America to steal Spanish colonies. 1572, tried to attack Panama but he knew that ships loaded with gold and silver left port of Nombre de Dios to return to Spain; he raided the town.

-Also captured the “Nuestra Señora de la Concepcion”, worth 600 million.

-Circumnavigated the globe, partly so that he could seek revenge by decreasing the amount of fortune Spain had.

Wealth

A

-Young age, lived with Hawkin’s family in Plymouth, from a small upbringing, did not gain a lot of money at first.

-300 people enslaved from Sierra Leone.

-In San Juan de Ulua, did not gain a profit.

-Drake, 1572, led an expedition. Nombre de Dios raid.

-In order to gain this money, we was well-equipped with astrolabes and maps for efficiency.

-He valued wealth so much that he obtained as much as he could from the unseaworthy ship Mary before he continued with his expedition despite having large sums of money already.

-Nuestra Señora de la Concepcion, 600 million.

-Today’s money, everything he earned totals up to 480 million, took 6 days to transfer into the Golden Hind.

-On return journey, he took a wide range of spices, 6 tons of spices to sell.

-Knighted by Queen on 4th April 1581, asked for extra 10k himself and 40k with his crew. Rest was in Tower of London, consisting of 100lbs of gold and 650 bars of silver.

-Could afford a house with the amount of fortune he had.
