Part 3- Chromsomes and cells Flashcards
Where are chromosomes found?
They are found in the nucleus, they are made up of DNA. Genes are sections of the chromosomes.
What does the nucleus contain?
The genetic information within a cell (chromosomes)
Where are chromosomes found?
Found in the cell nucleus, they are long coils of DNA that contain genes.
What is the gene?
A section of DNA in the chromosome that codes for certain proteins.
The sperm cell and egg cell have half the number of chromosomes. What are they and what is the number of chromosomes?
Each contain 23 chromosomes making up 46 overall.
Can a stem cell become anything?
Yes.
What are stem cells?
The inner cells of the embryo which go to form every type of cell in the body.
Future of stem cells:
- replacing damaged body parts i.e nerves/skin
- growing new organs
- paralysis, infertility and major burns could be helped.
Problems of stem cells:
- ethical problems with using embryos. Seen as potential human beings.
- slow, difficult, expensive.
- could cause cancer
