Part 3 Flashcards
Red blood cells (RBCs) or erythrocytes function
Hemoglobin within RBCs transports most oxygen and part of carbon dioxide in blood
White blood cells (leukocytes) contains
Nucleus,
Organelles,
But no hemoglobin
Leukocytes are classified as Granular and Agranular
Granular: containing vesicles that appear when the cells are stained).
AGranular leukocytes(containing no granules: neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils
Agranular(no granules)
Agranular leukocytes: lymphocytes, monocytes
How long cab white blood cells love for and what is their function?
- months or years
-combat invading microbes
What does it generally mean when there is an elevation is white blood count
-infection
-inflammation
What happens during invasion?
-what is the process called
-many white blood cells are able to leave the bloodstream and collect at sites of invasion
-emigration(diaprdesis)
Neutrophils
Bacterial infection, burns, stress, inflammation
Lymphocytes protects against
Viral infections, some leukemia, infectious mononucleosis
Monocytes protects against
Viral or fungal infectious, tuberculosis, some leukemia, other chronic diseases
Eosinophils
Allergic reactions, parasities
infections, autoimmune diseases
Basophils protect against
Allergic reactions,
Leukemia,
cancers,
hypothyroidism
