part 2 - oral surgery Flashcards
function of universal extraction forceps
extracts teeth on either side of the same arch
functions of rongeurs
used to trim alveolar bone
function of bone files
smooths surface of the bone after use of rongeur
function of periosteal elevator
used to reflect and retrct the periosteum from surface of bone and detach gingival tissues from cervix of tooth
function of curette
removes tissue from tooth socket
straight elevator
applies leverage against the tooth to loosen it for periodontal ligaments
hemostat
used to grasp and hold things
equipment needed for alveoplasty and order it is used
- forceps
- elevators
- rongeur
- bone file
- scalpel
- suture material and needle
- needle holder
- susture scissors
- sterile saline solution
biopsy techniques
exfoliative
- removes tissue from all three epithelial layers of oral mucose
incisional
- if lesion is larger than 1 cm in all dimensions
- surgeon will remove portion of tissue from lesion
excisional
- removal of entire lesion plus some adjacent normal tissue
postop instructions following forcep extraction
- keep pack for 30-45 minute
- do not disturb the clot
- restrict strenuous work or physical activity
- place cold pack for 20 min on and off intervals
- after 24 hours apply external heat
- start rinsing oral cavity with saline solution
- instruct patient to eat soft foods
suture materials
absorbable sutures
- plain catgut fastest healing)
- chromic catgut (slower healing)
- polyglactin
non-absorbable
- silk
- polyester fiber
- nylon
suture procedures
- remove suture material from sterile package
- use needle holder and clamp suture
- transfer needle holder to surgeon
- retract tongue or cheek
- after tying, use suture scissors to cut
- retrieve suturing supplies from surgeon
- record
types of impaction
hard tissue impaction
- tooth is partially or fully covereed by bone and gingival tissues
soft tissue impaction
- oral condition where tooth is partially or fully covered by gingival tissues
