Part 2 of muscle physiology Flashcards
Carpel tunnel affects ?
Median Nerve
Example of mononeuropathy
Carpel tunnel syndrome
What is Multiple sclerosis
Condition that affects nerves, Myelin sheath is damaged
What is MS caused by ?
Demyelination of CNS neurons
The Myelin sheath is damaged
This forms plaques in the brain
It also could be because our own antibodies attack the myelin sheath (immune-mediated)
Triggered by Epstein bar virus
Genetic component
Related to Vit D
common in women
What are the different forms of multiple sclerosis ?
Progress relapsing multiple sclerosis
Secondary Progressive multiple sclerosis
Primary progressive multiple sclerosis
Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis 80% then 65% will have decline between attacks without any distinct periods of remission
Signs and symptoms of MS
Muscle weakness
blurred vision
mild ocular pain
paraesthesia - numbness and tingling
abnormal gait, bladder, and sexual dysfunction
Vertigo
nystagmus
speech disturbance
fatigue
psycological effects such as depression, forgetfullness
Diagnosis of MS
MRI
Treatment of MS
Management of symptoms
Manage healthy lifestyle
acute attacks can be treated by corticosteroids
and interferons
What is Myasthenia Gravis
Autoimmune disease affects the neuromuscular junction
It affects more males around 50-60 years of age
females 20-40 years
What receptor does Myasthenia Gravis affect?
Acetylcholine receptor
Auto - antibodies are formed against which receptor ?
Acetylcholine receptor on the motor end plate
Signs and symptoms
Fatigue
Diplopia
Diagnosis
History
Examination
Anti - Cholinterase test
Treatment
immunosuppressant
Anti cholinergic drugs such as neostigmine
Corticosteroid to suppress immune respone
Lambert E syndrome
Presynaptic
antibodies are produced against calcium
Also assoc with muscular weakness
