Election of 1800
John Adams vs. Thomas Jefferson
The election was decided by the House of Representatives because both candidates had 73 electoral votes
Louisiana Purchase
France sells the territory for $15 million. Thomas Jefferson made the purchase and a group of Federalists threatened to secede because of it.
Lewis and Clark Expedition
Were sent to explore the Louisiana territory. They followed the Missouri River on their way to the Pacific Ocean. Their mission inspired people to move west.
Impressment and the attack of the Chesapeake
Impressment is the act of forcing Americans to serve in the British Navy. The Chesapeake ship was intercepted by a British vessel demanding to search for dissenters.the captain refused,so the British commander attacked.
War Hawks from the War of 1812
War Hawks were people who pushed for war with Great Britain.
Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun were War Hawks.
War of 1812 – DC burned, Fort McHenry, Battle of New Orleans
The Capitol, the library of Congress, and the presidents’s mansion were burned.
Fort McHenry was the fort at the entrance to Baltimore Harbor.
The battle of New Orleans took place after the Treaty of Ghent was signed.
The Star Spangled Banner
Was written by Francis Scott Key when the Fort McHenry bombardment was going on.
Monroe Doctrine
Stated that the Western Hemisphere was no longer open for colonization. The United States would regard any interference as a threat to its security.
Irish Potato Famine’s relationship to Immigration
Many Irish people immigrated to the U.S. due to the potato famine

The speaker of the house,Henry Clay, meets with John Quincy Adams and agrees to use his influence to help Adams get the presidency
Andrew Jackson – spoils system, fight with the bank
Spoils system- the practice of replacing government employees with the winning candidate’s supporters. Andrew Jackson tried to kill the bank by withdrawing all federal funds. This caused the nation to experience a depression.

William Henry Harrison’s Presidency
He had to shortest presidency of just 32 days because he dies of pneumonia. He gave an inauguration speech that lasted over 2 hours.
Manifest Destiny
Belief that the U.S. was destined by God to extend its boundaries to the Pacific Ocean
Texas Rebellion
Texas wanted its independence. Travis’ Texans beat Santa Anna’s Mexican troops at the battle of the Alamo.
