what is a democracy?
system of government in which citizens freely choose representatives to govern the country and make laws on their behalf

- Australians involved in how country is governed
- power of government comes from Australian people

- only parliament has the power to change and make laws that govern the country
what is the ‘rule of law’
- all Australians are equal under law and no person or group is above the law

2) make false allegations (slander/defamation)

freedom to meet with anyone

what does it mean if the government is secular?
- no official national religion

what someone achieves in life should be a result of their hard work and talents rather than their wealth or background.
4 responsibilities of an Australian citizen
1) obey the law
2) vote in federal, state or territory elections + referendums
3) defend Australia should the need arise
4) serve on a jury if called to do so
6 Privileges of being as aus cit
1) vote in fed, state, terr elcs + referendum
2) apply to work in Australian Public Service or in the Australian defence force
3) seek election to parliament
4) apply for an Australian passport and re-entre Australia freely
5) ask for consular assistance from an Australian office while overseas
6) register children born overseas as Australian citizens by descent
