Part 2 Flashcards
Polysyndeton
Deliberate use of many conjunctions.
(The effect of polysyndeton is too slow down the rhythen of the sentence.)
Ex: I said, Who killed him?
Alliteration
Repetition of initial or medial consonants in two or more adjacent words. Overused, it sounds silly.
Ex: “Already American vessels has been searched, seized, and sank.”
Metaphor
Implied comparison between two things of unlike nature.
Ex: “All the world’s a stage. And all the men and women merely players.”
Simile
Explicit comparison between two things of unlike nature.
Ex: “The night is bleeding like a cut.”
Synecdoche
Figure of speech in which a part stands for the whole
Ex: All HANDS on deck.
Metonymy
Substitution of some attributive or suggestive word for what is actually meant
Ex: “The White House asked the television networks for air time on Monday night.”
Personification
Investing abstractions or inanimate objects with human qualities.
Ex: “The flowers danced in the wind as the leaves of the trees sang in the breeze.”
