Part 2 Flashcards
Endocrine organs of the brain
Hypothalamus
Pineal gland
Pituitary gland
Pineal gland
- lies in posterior portion of roof of third ventricle
- contains pinealocytes
-synthesizes hormone melatonin(biological clock)
Hypothalamus
-works with Pituitary to maintain homeostasis
- releases hormones to Pituitary using hypophyseal portal system
-directly connected to posterior Pituitary infundibulum
Oxytocin
- stimulates uterine contractions
-promotes milk when suckling of breasts - important for social bonding
ADH
- releases in osmotic pressure to conserve water also known as vasopressin
Two classes of hypothalamic regulatory
- Releasing hormones
- Inhibiting hormones
Releasing hormones (RH)
-stimulates synthesis and secretion of one or more anterior lobe
- inhibiting hormones- prevent synthesis and secretion of hormones from anterior lobe
Rate is controlled negative feedback
Pancreas lies between
Inferior border of stomach and proximal portion of small intestine
Contains exocrine and endocrine cells
pancreatic acini
Exocrine cells of pancreas
-secrete digestive enzymes
