What is Image Restoration Strategies?
Strategies that help us restore our image once someone thinks we did something. Includes Denial, Evading, Reducing Offensivenenss, and Accountability.
What does someone do who is using denial?
Denial is when you deny that you did something. You shift the blame to someone else.(Bill Clinton)
What does someone do who is evading Responsibility?
Doesn’t deny that they were involved, but blames circumstances or someone else or says it was an accident. Provocation (reaction to what someone else did), Defeasibility (didn’t have enough information), accident (It was an accident), and good intentions (Thought the act would help).
What does Compensating look like?
Compensating includes bolstering(Focus on the good we’ve done, not the bad), minimization (make it look smaller than it was), differentiation (It wasn’t as bad as this…or it could have been worse), transcendence (place the act in a different context), attack the accuser (Attack the accuser’s credibility), and compensation(Offer payment to make them go away).
What are RICE powers?
Rice stands for R-Resource control; I - Interpersonal linkage; C-Communication; E-Expertise.
Give an example of Resource Control
A father tells his son that he can only have ice cream if he finishes his chores.
Give an example of Interpersonal Linkage
A person gets hired because his best friend is the boss.
Give an example of Communication skills
This includes people who have charisma. People can get others to do something because they are likeable. My boss communicates well with others. She’s able to get cooperation through her communication skills
Give an example of Expertise
A piano teacher is able to help her student through a tricky new piece because she is an expert in the field of piano.
Name the 4 conflict styles
Dominating (high concern for self/low concern for others), Avoiding (Low concern for self/low concern for others), Compromising (Low concern for self/high concern for others), and Integrating (High concern for self and others).
Give an example of Dominating
When your boss threatens to fire you if you don’t do what they’re asking.
Give an example of Avoiding
You’re trying to talk about an issue and the person refuses to talk about it. They keep changing the subject.
Give an example of Compromising
You tell your husband that you’ll fix dinner tonight if he’ll do breakfast in the morning.
Give an example of Obliging
You’re in a group discussion and everyone wants to go bowling. You hate bowling, but you won’t argue because others want to go bowling.
