The time before written records
Pre-history
Knowledge and understanding of the past and involves the study of its written records and sources of information.
History
Anything that existed at that time being researched
Ex. Tools, diary, photo, paintings, writings, transcripts.
Primary source
Anything that was created afterwards
Ex. Textbook, films, museums.
Secondary source
A written document preserving knowledge of facts or events
Written records
Valuable information can come from the spoken words
Oral records
Information about daily life from visual sources:objects and representation.
Visual records
Is a branch of anthropology which studies the physical evidence, called artifacts
Archeology
Things that people leave behind
Ex. Clay cups, bones, dishes and arts.
Artifacts
Compares objects found in the Stratford layers of the earth, with similar objects already dated elsewhere
Stratigraphy
Method of scientific dating based on the analysis of tree-ring growth patterns
Dendrochronology
Stone tools absorb water. By measuring the width of this layer with a microscope, scientists can determine when a stone was cut.
Hydration dating
The different types and amount of pollen can tel scientist about the historical climate.
Pollen analysis
Measuring how much radioactive carbon is present in the organic remains in ancient objects to make an informed guess about their age.

To learn about common history that can help unite a group of people and create a sense of identity
