PART 1 - AVIATION TOPICS Flashcards

1
Q

Why did you decide to become a pilot?

A

First of all, I decided to become a pilot when I turned 13. I was really young, however I already knew that working in a regular job just to pay the bills wasn’t really living. So I decided to ask God which way I should follow to have fun. Then, I got my answer and here I am.

Q

Why did you choose to work in aviation?

A

Beyond the fact that I love airplanes, I chose to work in aviation to have fun while working. We see people all around the world who wanna live a different life, but they don’t do anything about it. Well, not me. I don’t wanna work because I have a ton of bills to pay off. I wanna work, because being a pilot is an amazing adventure.

Q

How was your first flight?

A

My first flight was pretty normal. I was flying under visual flight rules, of course, the weather was good, no clouds, no wind and good visibility. My instructor, however, wasn’t prepared to teach, I mean, he didn’t know how to deal with a first flight student.

In your opinion, what is the most difficult part of a pilot’s career?

A

Since my parents are not rich, and I had to work to pay for my course, I would say that the hardest part of a pilot’s career is getting the money to pay off all hours of flight. Even so, I am under the impression that, getting a job might be quit difficult.

Q

What is the importance of checking weather before a flight?

A

Checking the weather before a flight is importante because it helps you to plann your route and avoid bad situations. Some aircrafts have cross wind limitations due to its rudder size, therefore checking the wind can avoid issues during the landing.

Q

Tell me about the aircraft you fly.

A

I fly a tail wheel airplane from Argentina, it’s an instruction airplane, however it’s not very safe. Most of pilots don’t like to fly this airplane, but, in my mind, this plane has made good pilots in its history.

28
Q

What kinds of aircrafts do you fly?

A

I fly two kinds of aircrafts: a tail wheel aircraft and a trycicle one. The first one is an Argentine aircraft very famous in Brazil. And the seconde one is a C152, which is the most popular instruction airplane in our country.

29
Q

In your opinion, what’s the most difficult aircraft to fly?

A

It seems to me that military aircrafts are really difficult to fly. The main reason why is because they’re very unstable and reach a big g force. In other words, they don’t seem to be easy to control.

30
Q

What kinds of aircraft do you like to operate and why?

A

The kind of aircraft that I like to operate the most is tail wheel airplanes. I really don’t know the reason why, but, for me, they’re easy to land. There are two ways to land this kind of aircraft. You can perform a three point landing or a wheel landing. The wheel landing is the easiest one. It’s easier than land a trycicle airplane.

31
Q

What do you think about the last aircraft you flew?

A

The last aircraft that I flew was a C152. For me, tail wheel airplanes are easier to land than trycicle airplanes. So, as I prefer tail wheel airplane, I would say that the last aircraft I flew wasn’t that good.

32
Q

Which do you enjoy the most flying a small aircraft or a bigger jet?

A

I’d rather fly a small aircraft since the big jets fly fastly and you can’t enjoy the flight. Moreover, the big jets fly higher, so you will just watch clouds instead of enjoying the landscape.

33
Q

Which is your favorite time of the day to fly?

A

I’d rather fly in the afternoon. Even though we experience a lot of turbulence due the hot weather, when I fly in the afternoon, I can use my morning time to study, so I get more productive.

34
Q

Which is the airport you most like to land at?

A

The airport I most like to land is Rio Quente. Even though the runway is short and a little dangerous due to the landscape around, It’s an amazing place. There’s an asphalt runway, no ATC, no traffic, always headwind and even with a hot weather, there’s always a good visibility and few turbulence.

35
Q

Describe the airport you operate at most frequently.

A

I operate most frequently at Uberlândia airport. It’s an asphalt runway, controlled area, big airlines company are always operating there, but it’s still a calm place to fly. Moreover, it’s a long runway, with IFR procedures and usually good weather.

36
Q

Why do you think it is important for a pilot to study meteorology?

A

First of all, It’s important for a pilot to study weather, because the weather is unpredictable, even with studies and information provided by the professionals, it’s hard to know everything that is happening or will happen during the flight. Bad weather have been causing accidents during the aviation history.

37
Q

Why is it important for pilot to understant and speak English?

A

To start with, english is the language of aviation, the manuals and the checklist are in English, in addition to that communication is one of the most important skills when you’re flying an airplane. Moreover, miscommunication can cause accidents and if you wanna fly abroad you must speak english.

38
Q

When and where will you next simulator training happen? When and where will your next simulator training take place?

A

My next simulator training will take place in Jundiai on monday. I’m going there to learn how to operate an Airbus, it’s a small training, really cheap, but still very important to update my curriculum and prepare myself to work as a pilot.

39
Q

What are you doing to keep your flying skills?

A

First of all, to keep my flying skills I’m always going to the simulator to practice how to fly under instrument flight rules. Moreover, I also like to imagine myself landing aircraft. I believe if I do a lot of mental flights, I will perform better landings.

40
Q

Which skills are you currently planning to develop in your career?

A

Currently, I’m planning on developing my IFR skills, that’s the reason why I’m always going to the simulator. Moreover, I’m also planning on reading documents and books to be prepared for a selection process. In addition to that, I believe that learning other languages, besides the english, can make me stand out from the other pilots.

41
Q

Which phase of the flight is more hazardous in your opinion: landing or takeoff?

A

To my mind, landing is more dangerous than takeoff. The reason why is because tail wheel airplanes can be very trick during landing. Many accidents can occur during this phase of flight such as runway excursion. I almost experienced a runway excursion, thanks God nothing happened. However since then, I got a little afraid of landing with crosswind.

42
Q

Which is the most critical phase of the flight?

A

Based on my experience, the most critical phase of the flight is landing. I have almost experience a runway excursion once due to a crosswind during landing and since then I got a little afraid of it. So, landing is, in my opinion, the most critical phase of the flight, especially if you’re flying a tail wheel airplane.

43
Q

What is the difference between V1 and V2?

A

To begin with, the difference between V1 and V2 is

44
Q

What emergencies situations can happen during landing?

A

To start with, many emergencies situations can happen during landing for instance tire blowout, runway excursion, runway incursion of a vehicle or other aircraft and a landing gear collapse. A landing can be also critical if the aircraft experiences issues during approach such as bird strike, engine failure, fuel starvation and stuff like that.

45
Q

How would you react in the case of an emergency?

A

I have never been in an emergency, however If I had been in a emergency, I believe I would react very calmly since, as pilots, we are prepared for emergency situations not for normal procedures. Therefore, in the case of an emergency I would react very well.

46
Q

Tell me about some emergency situations that may happen in a flight.

A

Many emergency situation may happen depending on the flight phase. In a cruise flight may happen an engine failure, a despressurization, a hydralic system failure or a navigation equipment failure. During aproach or after takeoff, can happen a bird strike. During landing, runway incursion, runway excursion and a tire blowout are very popular emergency situations.

47
Q

How often do you think a pilot should train for emergency situation?

A

To my mind, pilots shoudl train at least once a month for emergency situations. I know they don’t do it very often, but I believe if you spend a lot of time without training it, you will lose a lot of what you have learnt. Therefore, I would say once a month, at least. It’s important to be updated.

48
Q

What are the difficulties of flying outside of Brazil?

A

There are three main difficulties of flying outside of Brazil The first one is the english languages. I know there are a lot of pilots who don’t wanna and don’t like to study english, so for them It’s a big difficulty. The second one is the rules of flight. There are some differences from country to country. And the third one is get use to the airspace, because, of course, It’s also different.

49
Q

How important is english language for the aviation community?

A

English language is very important for the aviation community since all the manuals and checklist are in english. Moreover, the communication with the ATC is english when you are flying outside of Brazil, I mean you can learn spanish to fly in Mexico and french to fly in France, but it’s really unproductive and makes no sense.

50
Q

How does having at least ICAO level 4 help a pilot to get a job?

A

According to ICAO, all pilots must have, at least, ICAO level 4 to get a job in an airline company. It’s not something that the companies are demanding, it’s kind of an international rule. And besides, speaking english is one of the basics skills of a pilot.

51
Q

How was your first experience using phraseology in English?

A

My first experience using phraseology in English happened in the simulator. I was practicing how to fly under IFR with a friend of mine and he told me that we could try to do the phraseology in English. And we did it. And it, actually, happened very well.

52
Q

What will you do as soon as you receive the result of this test?

A

The first thing I will do when I receive the result of this test is update my resumé. Azul airlines is not demanding ICAO4 anymore to get in to Conecta. However, having ICAO makes you stand out from the other applicants. Therefore, I’ll update my resumé, for sure!

53
Q

What do you think will change in the future in relation to job opportunities for pilots?

A

Many things will change in the future in relation to job opportunities for pilots for example: the pilots will make more money, there will be more openings to pilots, more people will be interested in other kind of jobs such as techonology and investments. This will lead to a lack of pilots.

54
Q

What do you think about the idea that pilots will be replaced by computers?

A

I think the idea that pilots will be replaced by computer is nonsense. Even though an airplane can fly by itself, it can’t communicate and navigate. If a computer flies it, you’ll need a person outside the airplane to control it. Would you trust traveling in an airplane controlled by someone who is not inside it? I wouldn’t and I don’t think someone will.

55
Q

What would you say to a student pilot who dreams of working for a big airline company?

A

I would say to a student who dreams of being a pilot in a big airline company that he or she must study harder than everybody else. After all, being a pilot is not just about know how to fly an airplane. It’s about being the best person you are able to be, you must live in your best version, especially if you wanna join an airline company. The bests pilot are working in an airline company. If you wanna join the bests, you must be your best self.

56
Q

What are air companies doing to improve the English proficiency of their pilots?

A
57
Q

What are airline companies doing to improve safety on board?

A

I think the main thing that the airline companies are doing to improve safety on board is investing in training. If a crew is trained in the simulator to an emergency situations, whenever it happens they will know how to deal with it. Moreover, If I am not mistaken, the airlines company are providing a better environmentf outside work. Since if a pilot has a better life outside the aircraft, he or she will be less tired during working, and this can drop down the number of accidents.

58
Q

What qualities do you think a good pilot should have?

A

To my mind, a good pilot should have many qualities for instance he or she should be attentiv, calm, studious, calm, helpful, careful, flexible, polite, clever, hard-working and above all he or she must be persistent, otherwise he or she will quit easily.

59
Q

Tell me about your ability to work under pressure.

A

The best way to tell you about my ability to work under pressur is telling you a history, a true history that happened in my life when I was in college. I was working in an aircraft project, and I had to draw an entire airplane inside a car in fifteen minutes and I didn’t know how to use the drawing software. For my surprise, I was able to do it. That day I saw how much I was able to work under pressure.

60
Q

Why should pilots always maintain situational awareness?

A

The pilots should always maintain situation awareness because it’s important to report your correct position to ATC and also to know the traffic nearby. If you don’t maintain your situation awareness, you might cause an accident. Therefore the main reason why you should know how to locate yourself is avoid a collision. As I always say… a pilot must know where he or she is and also where the others aircrafts are.

61
Q

What was the most difficult situation you had in a flight?

A

I had three difficult situations flying. The first one was after a takeoff, I had an engine failure and thanks God I was near the aerodrome, so I could return and land. The second one happened in the same place, in the same aircraft, and it was the same situation. The third one was after a landing, I kind of experienced a strong crosswind and almost had a runway excursion.

62
Q

How should a pilot behave when the other pilot is incapacitated?

A

When a pilot is incapacitated, the other pilot must take over the control of aircraft. In addition to that, he must report the situation to ATC because it’s kind of critical and proceed with the flight normally. Moreover, he should land as soon as possible and request medical assistance upon arrival, because it can be something more serious than you think.

63
Q

What must you report to the air traffic controller in case of depressurization?

A

In case of depressurization, I must report to air traffic controller my altitude and also I have to say that I am descending to a lower flight level.

64
Q

What might happen in case a captain does not follow recommended CRM
procedures?

A
65
Q

What are your plans for aviation over the next 5 years?

A

My plans for the next 5 year are to be a captain and to join a big airline company.

66
Q

In your opinion, how will aircraft look like in 20 years / 10 years / a few years from now?

A

The aircraft will be more aerodynamic

67
Q

How do you think the cockpits will be in the future / in 10 years from now / in 20 years from now / in a few years from now?

A

From my perspective, in 10 years from now, all the aircraft will be glass cockpit, all instrument will be digital and also there will be no buttons. There’s already a project of a russian helicopter with a really modern cockpit and it’s really impressive. It’s totally clean, modern and with few information poping up for the pilot. I’m not sure if I will enjoy this kind of aircraft since I’m a really fan of classic aviation.

68
Q

In your opinion, what will change in the future for pilot’s training?

A

It seems to me that pilot’s training in the future will be more organized and serious than nowadays. ANAC has changed a lot of rules for flight schools in Brazil, and at least in my city, it has promoted a new perspective of what a flight school should be. As the name says, it’s a school and it should be seen as a school. Moreover, I believe instructors and students will change their behavior.

69
Q

How do you think the airspace will change in the next 10 years?

A

From my perspective, in the next 10 years the airspace won’t change so much. There might be more aircrafts in the brazilian airspace and we might have more rules to avoid drones, but besides that I don’t think we will have a lot of changes. The airspace will be managed the same way, we’ll probably face more changes in the charts, but that’s it. I see no big changes ahead.
