chronological age

- start with the areas where you will need quiet (auscultation) then perform the things that you dont need the quiet for (when baby is crying)
- save anything traumatic for last

- start with play (counting toes)
- introduce equipment slowly

For the head to toe where should you start and end for a preschool age child?
- if cooperative proceed with head to toe
- uncooperative proceed with toddler order
For school age and adolescence what should we offer in regards to parents?

How is cooperation usually enhanced?

What are the aspects of the growth measurement for the physical exam?
- growth charts
- length (birth to 2 or children who can’t stand or who are laying supine)
- height (children who stand after age 2)
- weight
- skin full thickness (pinching back of arm)
- arm circumference (half way down between shoulder and elbow)
- head circumference
What is the frankfort plane when measuring the height and length of a child?
imaginary line from orbit of eye through the highest point of auditory meatus
What are some reasons to call the child life specialist?
- prep for invasive procedure
- difficulty coping
- oppositional behavior/refusing to cooperate
- child/patient/sibling expressing fears and needing follow-up
- child is withdrawn
- child has difficulty taking meds
- recent loss
- chronic illness diagnosis
- traumatic accident
- suspected child abuse
