- urgent: done within 24-48 hours
- emergency: done immediately
What are the 2 types of risks of surgical procedures?
- minor: primarily elective (often performed in an outpatient setting or ambulatory setting)
- major: may be elective, urgent, or emergent (performed in patient)
What are the 8 types of purpose for surgical procedures?
- diagnostic: to make or confirm a diagnosis
- curative:
- preventative:
- ablative: to remove a diseased body part
- palliative: relieve/reduce illness, not curative
- reconstructive: restore function or improve self concept
- transplantation: replace organs/structures that are diseased/malfunctioning
- constructive: restore function to congenital anomalies
